🎯 Happy Handling: Skills to Reduce Stress During Grooming and Vet Visits 🎯
Help your dog feel calm, confident, and comfortable during everyday care routines like nail trims, vet exams, grooming, and hands-on handling. Happy Handling focuses on teaching dogs how to actively participate in their care using gentle, rewards-based training that prioritizes choice, trust, and communication. This class is ideal for dogs who struggle with handling—or for owners who want to prevent stress before it starts.
Through cooperative care skills, you’ll learn how to replace restraint and force with clear communication and predictable routines. Dogs are taught that they have a voice in the process, which leads to calmer behavior, reduced anxiety, and safer handling experiences for everyone involved. The class progresses gradually, ensuring each dog works at their own comfort level while building lasting confidence.
What You’ll Learn
Each week, we’ll introduce foundational cooperative care skills and thoughtfully layer them into real-life handling scenarios. You’ll learn how to:
- Teach your dog to use a Cooperative Care (CC) Place as a safe, predictable station
- Build calmness and impulse control through Zen-style exercises
- Use chin rests to communicate consent and comfort during handling
- Gently condition your dog to touch, restraint, and body manipulation
- Introduce care routines for eyes, ears, feet, mouth, and nails
- Confidently prepare your dog for tools, grooming equipment, and veterinary exams
- Practice calm handling around new people and environments
- Introduce muzzle conditioning and medication skills in a low-stress way
All skills are taught using small, achievable steps that help dogs stay relaxed and successful throughout the learning process
We’ll keep sessions positive, supportive, and practical—helping dogs and handlers make meaningful progress that carries over into real vet and grooming visits.
